The Fun Part

Camp 1831 is a three-day, two-night experience designed specifically for first-year students. Camp days run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and participants engage in a packed schedule full of fun activities. From small group sessions to “adventures” to exciting Camp traditions, Camp 1831 is designed to be the ULTIMATE first-year experience. Full participation in the schedule is essential to make the most of Camp 1831! 


Activity Descriptions

Small Group Sessions 

Each Camp participant will be assigned to a small group of approximately 20 students and led by the A-Team. During these sessions, participants will build relationships with each other, reflect on their experiences, and discuss meaningful topics surrounding the transition to college life, becoming a leader on campus, and serving the UA community. 

Choose Your Own Adventure 

Part of the Camp 1831 schedule allows participants to “choose their own adventure” as they explore some of the fun activities students can participate in on campus. Camp 1831 participants will receive a link to their email on July 7, 2025, to select their Adventure. Mark your calendar!

A list of possible Adventure options is available below: 

  • Basketball at the Witt Play a pick-up game or just shoot around while checking out the courts at the Witt Center. 
  • Bear Bryant Museum Tour Visit the iconic Bear Bryant Museum for a tour showcasing the athletic history at UA. 
  • Board Games Kick back and relax while you enjoy some fun board games with friends. 
  • Bryce Hospital Museum Explore the Bryce Hospital Museum within UA’s Randall Welcome Center. The museum offers education and information through its extensive collection of photographs, artifacts, and exhibits while honoring the history and progress of mental health care.
  • Campus Library Tour Learn more about the resources, technology, study rooms, and subscriptions UA’s libraries have to offer to enhance your learning at the Capstone through a scavenger hunt led by library staff.
  • Campus Museum Tours Explore the Gorgas House which is the oldest structure on UA’s campus and take a tour of the Natural History Museum in Smith Hall to explore various artifacts from natural history, including the first meteorite to strike a human.
  • Canvas and Coffee Channel your inner Bob Ross with our paint party. We will bring the brushes, canvas, paint, and coffee – all you need is your creativity!
  • Digital Media Center Tour Tour UA’s Digital Media Center, home to four professional media outlets including WVUA 23 and Crimson Tide Productions. 
  • DIY Planners Looking to get organized? Come build and design your own planner for the year.
  • Engineering Lab Tour Get a close-up look at some of UA’s state-of-the-art labs and meet the faculty who run them. 
  • eSports Enjoy a variety of Nintendo Switch games with your fellow Camp 1831 participants. 
  • Healthy Eating & Cooking Class No kitchen? No problem! Learn how to make gourmet dishes in your residence hall.
  • Line Dancing Guided class by professional instructor on different line dances.
  • President’s Mansion Tour Get a behind-the-scenes look at the President’s Mansion and take some time for a guided walk around campus to find your classes. 
  • Quad Games Want to practice outdoor games before your first tailgate on the Quad? Come check out corn hole, Spikeball, and others! 
  • Rockwall Climbing See if you can hang with the best at one of UA’s awesome rock climbing walls! 
  • Self-Defense Class with UAPD Learn a few self-defense moves from the University of Alabama Police Department.
  • SONGO Play BINGO with a variety of songs.
  • Stadium Tour Look behind the scenes at UA’s Bryant-Denny Stadium to see facilities and learn how UA traditions came to be in preparation for your first football season as a UA Student.
  • Weight Lifting Lift some weights at your own pace using freestyle weights and workout machines.

History & Tradition 

Throughout Camp 1831, participants will learn UA cheers, songs, traditions, and history. The goal is for participants to feel a sense of connection and pride in The University of Alabama! 

Team Building 

Students will participate in field activities to build connections with one another and to build their own confidence. These activities will be challenge by choice and will allow participants to push themselves and support one another by practicing communication, critical thinking, and strategy. 

Leadership & Service 

Students will learn about various leadership and service opportunities that exist at UA, set goals for their time on campus by speaking to current students and staff, and engage in dialogue about social issues in the community. They will leave with a plan of action for their own UA experience. 

Faculty & Staff Roundtable Discussions 

Students will form connections with UA faculty and staff representing various disciplines and research areas and gain insight into how to be successful in their academic career. 

Symbolic Activity 

This activity will symbolize a first-year student’s transition to becoming a UA student where they will “take their step into the Capstone.” The secret stays with Camp participants! 

Service Day 

On the last day of Camp 1831, participants take part in a variety of projects to support the Tuscaloosa community. Participants put their knowledge from service and leadership discussions during Camp 1831 small groups into action.
