Activity Descriptions

Small Group Sessions 

Each Camp 1831 participant will be assigned to a small group of approximately 20 students and led by the A-Team. During these sessions, participants will build relationships with each other, reflect on their experiences, and discuss meaningful topics surrounding the transition to college life, becoming a leader on campus, and serving the UA community. 

Choose Your Own Adventure 

Part of the Camp 1831 schedule allows participants to “choose their own adventure” as they explore some of the fun activities students can participate in on campus. Camp 1831 participants will receive a link to their email on July 6, 2026, to select their Adventure. Mark your calendar!

A list of possible Adventure options is available below: 

• Ballroom Dance Learn the basics of ballroom dancing while having fun, building confidence, or trying something completely new.
• Bama-ly Feud Team up with fellow students for a fun, family-feud style competition filled with laughs, friendly competition, and plenty of Bama spirit.
• Basketball at the Witt Play a pick up game or just shoot around at the Witt Student Activity Center.
• Bear Bryant Museum Tour Visit the iconic Paul Bryant Museum for a tour showcasing the athletic excellence of teams at UA.
• Board Games Kick back and relax while you enjoy some fun board games or Nintendo Switches with friends.. 
• Bryce Hospital Museum Explore the fascinating history of Bryce Hospital and learn about its impact on mental health care and Alabama history through a guided museum visit.
• Campus Library Tour Get familiar with campus by exploring key locations, learning helpful shortcuts, and discovering spaces that will become part of your everyday life.
• Campus Museum Tours Learn some of UA’s rich history and check out some of the state’s most unique archaeological finds.
• Campus Tour Learn some of UA’s rich history and check out some of the state’s most unique archaeological finds.
• Coffee, Canvas, & Crafts Channel your inner Bob Ross with our paint party and crafts. We will be bring the brushes, canvas, and craft supplies, all you need is your creativity! 
• Digital Media Center Tour Tour UA’s Digital Media Center, home to 4 professional media outlets including university-owned WVUA 23! Also, learn more about communication efforts at UA. 
• DIY Planners Looking to get organized? Come build and design your own planner for the academic year! 
• Engineering Lab Tour Get a first-hand look at some of the exciting innovations and discoveries happening in our prestigious College of Engineering. 
• Healthy Eating & Cooking Class No kitchen? No problem! Learn how to make some gourmet dishes with what you may have available for your first year at UA. 
• Line Dancing Step onto the dance floor and learn some fun line dances while meeting new friends and showing off your moves.
• Quad Games Want to practice outdoor games before your first tailgate on the Quad? Come check out corn hole, Spikeball, and others!
• Relaxation Room Take time to relax and rejuvenate your mind during Camp 1831 through a guided meditation labyrinth.  
• Rockwall Climbing Take adventure to new heights at the indoor climbing wall at the Witt.
• Self-Defense Class with UAPD Learn a few self-defense moves from the University of Alabama Police Department.
• SONGO Challenge your new friends to a fun game of Songo, a bingo game that’s perfect for music lovers.
• Weight Lifting Lift some weights at your own pace using freestyle weights and workout machines at the Witt.

History & Tradition 

Throughout Camp 1831, participants will learn UA cheers, songs, traditions, and history. The goal is for participants to feel a sense of connection and pride in The University of Alabama! 

Teambuilding 

Students will participate in field activities to build connections with one another and to build their own confidence. These activities will be challenge by choice and will allow participants to push themselves and support one another by practicing communication, critical thinking, and strategy. 

Leadership & Service 

Students will learn about various leadership and service opportunities that exist at UA, set goals for their time on campus by speaking to current students and staff, and engage in dialogue about social issues in the community. They will leave with a plan of action for their own UA experience. 

Faculty & Staff Roundtable Discussions 

Students will form connections with UA faculty and staff representing various disciplines and research areas and gain insight into how to be successful in their academic career. 

Symbolic Activity 

This activity will symbolize a first-year student’s transition to becoming a UA student where they will “take their step into the Capstone.” The secret stays with Camp participants! 

Service Day 

On the last day of Camp 1831, participants take part in a variety of projects to support the Tuscaloosa community. Participants put their knowledge from service and leadership discussions during Camp 1831 small groups into action.
