Camp 1831 is three day, two night program for first-year students with a packed schedule of events. Descriptions of scheduled events are available below. Camp 1831 Days are generally 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. filled with the activities listed below. Participation in the full schedule is a must for this ULTIMATE first year experience!

Activity Descriptions

Small Group Sessions
- Each camp participant will be assigned to a small group of approximately 15 students and led by A-Team leaders. During these sessions, participants will build relationships with one another, reflect on their camp experiences, and discuss meaningful topics surrounding transition to college life, becoming a leader on campus, and serving UA.
Choose Your Own Adventure
Part of the Camp 1831 schedule allows participants to choose their own adventure as they explore the unique offerings surrounding the UA campus. For 2024, Camp 1831 participants will receive a link to their email on July 8, 2024, at 10 AM Central Time to select their Adventure. Mark your calendar! A list of possible Adventure Options is available below:
- Adobe Express Demonstration: Interested in graphic design but need some help with the design piece? Come learn more about Adobe Express that is FREE To students and practice your skills. Think Canva…but FREE services to students at UA.
- Basketball at the Rec: Play a pick-up game or just around while checking out the courts at the Witt Center.
- Bear Bryant Museum Tour: Visit the iconic Bear Bryant Museum for a tour showcasing the athletic excellence of teams at UA!
- Board Games: Kick back and relax while you enjoy some fun board games with friends.
- Camp 1831 Crafts: Feeling crafty? From friendship bracelets to dream journals and more, partake in a range of different craft making.
- Canvas and Coffee: Channel your inner Bob Ross with our paint party. We will bring the brushes, canvas, paint, and coffee – all you need is your creativity!
- Career Center: Resume Workshop: Do you want to ensure your resume is in top shaper as you start your journey at UA? Join the Career Center for a FREE workshop on resume writing and utilizing their resources.
- Cooking Class: No kitchen? No problem! Learn how to make gourmet dishes around your residence hall.
- Digital Media Center Tour: Tour UA’s Digital Media Center home to four professional media outlets including WVUA 23 and Crimson Tide Productions.
- DIY Planners: Looking to get organized? Come build and design your own planner for the year!
- Dodgeball: Enjoy some competitive fun while playing indoor basketball at the Witt Center.
- Engineering Lab Tour: Get a close up look at some of UA’s state of the art labs and ask some questions to the faculty who run them.
- eSports: Are you up for the challenge of competing against others? Enjoy a variety of games and compete against your fellow Camp 1831 participants.
- Gorgas House and Natural History Museum Tours: Learn some of UA’s rich history and check out some of the state’s most unique archaeological finds.
- Hallowed Grounds Tour: Take a trip around UA’s campus to visit historical sites related to race, slavery, and progress at UA since opening in 1831.
- President’s Mansion Tour: See the behind the scenes of the President’s Mansion and take some time for a guided walk around classes to find your classes.
- Quad Games: Want to practice outdoor games before your first tailgate on the Quad? Come check out corn hole, spike ball, and others!
- Rockwall Climbing: See if you can hang with the best at one of UA’s awesome rock climbing walls!
- Silent Meditation: Take some time to relax and rejuvenate your mind through guided walking with the Labyrinth and Relaxation room.
- Weight Lifting: One word – gains! Lift some weights at your own pace to make sure you’re in tip-top share for your first year.

History & Tradition
- Throughout Camp 1831, participants will learn UA chants, cheers, songs, and traditions while also being quizzed on University of Alabama history and facts. The goal is for participants to feel a sense of pride in UA as their institution!

Team Building
- Each group will participate in field activities to build relationships with one another and to build their own confidence. These activities will be challenge by choice and will allow participants to push themselves and support one another by practicing communication, critical-thinking, and strategy.

UA Leadership & Service
- Students will learn about various opportunities that exist at UA and set goals for their time on campus by speaking to current students and staff as well as engaging in dialogue about social issues in the community. They will leave with a plan of action for their own UA experience.
Faculty & Staff Roundtable Discussions
- Students will learn from the experts on various disciplines and research areas, gain inside advice on how to be successful in their academic career, and build relationships with faculty and staff members in a casual setting.

Symbolic Activity
- This activity will symbolize a first-year student’s transition to becoming a UA student where they will “take the step into the Capstone.” The secret stays with camp participants!

Camp 1831 Service Day
- On the last day of Camp 1831, participants take part in a variety of projects to support the Tuscaloosa community. Participants put into action their knowledge from service and leadership discussions during Camp 1831 small groups.
