We at the Capstone Center for Student Success are here to support you, and we do this with a host of programs and services! With so many available resources, you may not know where to start which is why we want to highlight some of our amazing programs that can help you along your college journey.
Our first program spotlight is the Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO program! The SSS TRIO program is one available to all undergraduates but especially those who are first-time incoming freshmen. The SSS program’s purpose is to increase the retention and graduation rates of first-generation college students, low-income students, and students with disabilities.
Katelyn Sears, a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice, has been a part of TRIO since her freshman year. The biggest benefit of being in the TRIO program for Katelyn is having a support system throughout her college journey. She stated, “I think it’s just kind of having that support in my head. If I ever need anybody, I can just go, and there’s someone to help me.”
Katelyn also emphasized the benefit of free tutoring and access to academic coaching and advising provided by TRIO. “I know I’m probably gonna need tutoring in the future; I know I can get that access for tutoring, as well as like the academic coach. I see her once or twice a month,” Katelyn noted. In addition to tutoring, coaching, and advising, TRIO gives students access to academic and professional workshops, free courses for credit, peer mentoring, enrichment activities, and more.
If you are a student considering applying for TRIO, Katelyn encourages you to “Just take the opportunity. If it’s there, take it.”
